What counts as a dental emergency?
If you are experiencing any of the following, please contact us immediately. Delaying treatment can lead to more complex and costly procedures later.
Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
Whether from an accident, sports injury, or biting down on something hard, a broken tooth needs prompt repair to prevent infection and save the tooth structure.
Knocked-out tooth
A critical emergency. Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), keep it moist in milk or saliva, and get to our clinic within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving it.
Lost fillings or crowns
A lost filling or crown exposes the sensitive inner tooth, causing pain and risking further damage. We can quickly replace or recement the restoration.
Swollen face or gums (abscess)
Swelling in your gums, face, or neck — especially with a fever or bad taste in your mouth — signals a serious infection needing urgent antibiotic treatment and dental care.
Bleeding or trauma to the mouth
Any significant trauma to the lips, gums, or cheeks that causes uncontrolled bleeding should be seen immediately.
First Aid Tips
Immediate steps to take before you arrive
While you are on your way to our Wellington clinic, follow these first-aid steps.
For a toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently use dental floss to remove any trapped food. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Do not put aspirin directly on the gums.
For a broken tooth
Save any pieces you can find. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the area.
For a knocked-out tooth
Time is critical. Hold the tooth by the top (crown), rinse it gently with water if dirty (do not scrub), and try to gently place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it in a small container of milk and come to the clinic immediately.

Do I need an appointment for a dental emergency?
While we strongly recommend calling ahead on 04 389 3808 so we can prepare for your arrival, we do accept walk-in emergencies and will see you as soon as possible.
Are you open on weekends for emergencies?
Yes! Newtown Dental is open every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 8:30pm for emergency dental care in Wellington.
Does ACC cover emergency dental work?
If your dental emergency is the result of an accident or injury (such as a sports injury or a fall), ACC may cover some or all of the treatment costs. We can help you process the ACC paperwork at our clinic.
What if I have extreme dental anxiety?
We specialise in treating anxious patients. If you are in pain but terrified of treatment, we offer IV sedation to ensure you are completely relaxed and unaware during the emergency procedure.
