ACC Dental Treatment in Wellington
If a tooth is damaged in an accident, ACC may cover part of the cost of treating it.
ACC covers dental injuries caused by an accident — a knock playing sport, a fall, a car accident, or biting unexpectedly on something hard. It does not cover damage from decay, wear or grinding, which are treated as ordinary dental conditions. If you are unsure which applies, come in and we will assess it.
What to do after a dental injury
Get seen quickly
A knocked-out adult tooth is the most time-critical case in dentistry. Handle it by the crown, not the root, keep it moist in milk or saliva, and call us straight away. See emergency dentistry.
Tell us it was an accident
Mention how the damage happened when you book, and again at the appointment. The claim depends on the injury being accidental, so the details matter.
We lodge the claim
We can complete and submit the ACC claim for you at the appointment. You will still be told what any remaining cost is before treatment goes ahead.
What ACC does and does not cover
ACC contributes towards treating the injury itself. It is a contribution rather than full cover in most cases, so there is often a balance to pay, and the amount depends on the treatment involved. Cosmetic work that goes beyond repairing the injury is not covered.
Claims can be declined — most often where the damage turns out to be pre-existing, or where too much time has passed between the accident and being seen. Getting assessed promptly gives the claim the best chance.
