A veneer covers the visible surface of a tooth. They are used for teeth that are discoloured in a way whitening will not fix, chipped or worn at the edges, slightly crooked, or unevenly spaced. Veneers change appearance; they do not treat decay or gum disease, so anything like that is dealt with first.

Porcelain or composite

Composite veneers are built up directly onto the tooth in a single visit using tooth-coloured resin. They cost less, can often be done with little or no tooth reduction, and are straightforward to repair. They pick up stain over time and generally do not last as long as porcelain.

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory from impressions or a scan, then bonded on at a second appointment. They resist staining better and look closer to natural enamel, but they cost more and usually require some enamel to be removed first.

What to think about first

Where enamel is removed, the treatment is not reversible — the tooth will always need a veneer or crown from that point on. That is the single most important thing to be clear about before starting, and it is worth asking exactly how much preparation your case needs.

Veneers do not change colour later, so if you are considering whitening as well, whiten first and match the veneers to the result. If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects the work.
